McCalling all chatters...

I've finally finished (I swear I'm getting slower...and this was one of the least 'heavy' ones so far, and there's been loads of sunshine: perfect for sitting out of an evening to read "The Right Attitude the Rain", if you know what I mean...anyway
at 9pm let the comments commence - a few of my questions to get us goin'...
- did "the Rain" leave you dampened or refreshed?
- is Isabel REALLY forty-two?
- how did you find it with a man (A McC S) writing from a woman's Point-of-View?
- did you find the philosophical / ethical musings blending well with the character / plot?
I'm sure you've got a few Q's to pose yourself, set let's hear (read) all about it at 9pm
sweetest wishes
X

Hmmm...well we'll know if we have the 'right attitude' following our week camping in Hay-on-Wye! Albeit a beautiful town, it
is on the Welsh border - so rain is highly likely! No wonder there's so many book shops there (a good excuse to get stuck into a book while keeping dry!)
Well, this month's book appealed because it is written by
Alexander McCall Smith - great author
and staunch supporter of Book Aid International. We heard him talk at last year's Hay Festivel - and you just know he's a lovely fellow, with a wee twinkle in his eye.
The book promises to challenge one's ideas of morality and raise philosophical questions - but in a very unassuming and readable style.
Synopsis
The key to contentment in the Scottish climate is
The Right Attitude to Rain - just as in life the key to happiness lies in making the best of what you have. Bruised in love by her faithless Irish husband, Isabel Dalhousie is a connoisseur of intimate moral issues: she edits a philosophical journal and spends a great deal of her time considering how to improve the lives of those around her. There is her housekeeper Grace, whose future she must secure; her niece Cat, who is embarking on a new relationship with a dubious workaholic mummy's boy; and even an American couple newly arrived in Edinburgh on a tour. And then there is Jamie, Cat's ex-boyfriend, a handsome, gifted musician fourteen years Isabel's junior, with whom she is slowly and hopelessly falling in love. Intensely thoughtful and consistently entertaining,
The Right Attitude to Rain is shot through with compassion and unassuming intelligence.
