Hi everyone. I hope you have all enjoyed (or are enjoying) Black Girl White Girl. At the very least, I hope you have found lots to discuss about it. As I suggested the book, I thought I should post some possible questions for you to think about and to start us off at the next meeting. So, here are some questions to consider:
Why does Gemma decide to write down and reconstruct what happened to Minette 15 years ago?
Which character did you most sympathise with and why?
What do you think race relations were like at Schuyler?
I don't think any of these questions give away the plot at all if you haven't finished the book yet. Look forward to meeting with you soon. Humz

Hi. This is my first time with Burnt Sugar. I finished Black girl white girl last night. I cant say I really enjoyed this read, but I stuck with it to try and understand more about what would become of Genna and Mintte? I would say I most sympathised with Genna's character due to her desparate attmepts to be liked/accepted by Minette and when she touches on her childhood, it wasn't a very nice one, witnessing someone stabbing themselves and some abuse from visitors to her childhood home. I couldn't really connect with Minette and found her character cold, I imagine due to race issues at that time and before in America, I also think the had mental issues and perhaps an eating disorder although this could have been down to her Religious upbringing by her Father. I think Genna wanted to write about what happened to Minette 15 years ago due to feeling guilty for not having been able to help or save Minette and perhaps to prove she was nothing like her father and to be able to state if not out loud then in writing that she felt responsible for her father being prosecuted for the crimes he had comitted??? I didn't feel I truly got to know anyone's real character in this book.
