hey...I'm in for nine o'clock and the sun's still shining outside, might even be able to sit in the garden with the laptop

Hi Gleaming! You're right, it's gorgeous outside - not raining at all - so no need for an attitude - haha!

So - how did you find the book? A page turner or a slow burn?
burntsugar | Jun 25 2008, 20:58 pm
y'know...I feel this might be a minority view, but I found myself increasingly irritated, after quite a good start...

he (McC S) kept being quite open with Isabel's interfering-ness, so maybe I was supposed to feel irritated by her...

Hmm - It was a very gentle read. Almost to the point of getting a bit boring towards the end. But sometimes a nice easy-going book is what you need. It was very cosy and feel-good. I'm quite jealous of all their life-styles, especially Isabels. It was all very idyllic - but sometimes a bit of escapism is good, don't you think?

Her interfering was her personal struggle, I thought. Her whole ethical debate about the small actions one takes in life?

I agree that she was clearly a lovely person. I am quite envious of her ability to eithr do the right thing or be aware of her failings. Didn't feel that realistic in the end though for me!

I know what you mean...but I didn't think anything much happened, and even Tom, who I was starting to feel sympathy for, kinda blew it for me in the end...so there wasn't anyone I reeeeally felt for

There was definitely a theme about looks and how that can affects what you think about a person - it makes you prejudiced. Like Isabel questioning herself about whether she'd still fancy Jamie if he was ugly - and how she feels sorry for Tom with his disfiguration.
